We’re kicking off deer season with a new series called, “Flipping The Kill Switch” where we examine the moments and process that lead to regular hunting guys being able to consistently kill big bucks. This breakthrough moment can be remarkably hard to find and it leaves them frustrated while they search. Hopefully through this series you hear something that sparks the beginning of that moment and you can build on it as we go.
When Parker mentioned having Dakota on to kick off this series it was an immediate, “Yes!” Dakota seems to have found a process that allows him to be highly efficient in the deer woods on an annual basis. Starting in 2020, Dakota found a pattern of behavior in his area that not only allowed him to target deer in the season, but inventory them in the spring for the following year. This unique scouting pattern, where bucks show up in March where they would also be found during peak hunting allows him to scout for the following year with information during a period in which his involvement doesn’t have undue influence.
He emphasizes the importance of understanding deer behavior and patterns, as well as being mobile and adaptable in your hunting strategy. Hot feed trees once again become a focal point for this big buck killer, but in a less thought about way … hunting to and from them instead of on them. Overall, Dakota's approach to hunting is based on careful observation, knowledge of the land, and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.
